Fantastic! But isn’t a 1973 Mustang also a “lumbering heavy shell”. I mean, I love them, but they aren’t exactly thought of as being light and nimble. I guess the manual trans and better rear gears will help.

Well, they *look* really bulky, but they’re only something like 200lb heavier than their immediate predecessor. The previous sub-generation evolutions from ‘64-’70 had, however, added another 600lb... One doesn’t normally think of a ‘69 as being a boat anchor, but they kind of are.

Heavy, yes. Still 400lb lighter than an XJS when carrying a 351 CobraJet , so will still end up *at least somewhat* lighter.

True, the huge overhangs that resulted from making them longer but not increasing the wheelbase probably makes them look more tubby than they actually are.

My 17 1/2' long full size ‘63 Ford sedan, on the other hand, is the same weight as a ‘73 Mustang, and thereby lighter than an XJS. Ford built some pretty light cars for their footprint for a long time before crash safety started creeping in.
